Letter, 1898 August 26, New York City [to] Mr. [Edwin] Markham, [Staten Island] / C.W. Doyle. 1898.

Sends him his manuscript which is already initialed by Bierce; also sends him his Christmas story which made his daughter cry; writes that he send an Indian manuscript to Lippencot, who removed the sad stories which upsetshim; so he will send them "Achmet of Aligunj" instead.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
